In Spain, the car is in your name. And so is the responsibility

In Spain, car insurance doesn’t follow the driver. It follows the vehicle. That means: if something goes wrong, the person on the registration is fully liable — even if they weren’t behind the wheel.

You’re expected to get the right policy, with the right details, under the right conditions. For many expats, that’s a minefield of unfamiliar rules, language barriers and vague policies. We make sure everything is covered — properly, and in your language.

We work with trusted insurers like Allianz, Mapfre, Zurich and Asisa.
You tell us your situation and we sort out the insurance from start to finish.

  • No Spanish forms
  • No miscommunication
  • No gaps in coverage

Car insurance FAQ

Yes. At minimum, third-party liability insurance is legally required for every car registered in Spain – even if it’s not being driven. Driving without insurance is a criminal offence and can lead to heavy fines or confiscation of the vehicle.

Sometimes – but not long-term. Most insurers only cover vehicles with Spanish plates. If your car still has foreign registration, we’ll check what’s possible short-term, but you’ll likely need to re-register it (matriculate) in Spain.

In most cases: no. In Spain, the owner, policyholder, and main driver are expected to match.
If you’re driving a car that’s not in your name, we’ll help you check what’s allowed – and how to fix it if needed.

We offer the three main types:

  • Third-party only (obligatorio): covers damage you cause to others

  • Third-party with theft/fire/glass (terceros ampliado): includes common risks

  • Fully comprehensive (todo riesgo): covers damage to your own car too, even if it’s your fault

We’ll help you choose what actually makes sense for your car, age, and usage.

Sometimes. Some insurers in Spain accept foreign no-claims certificates — but it depends on the country and how it’s documented. We’ll check this for you and help you submit it if accepted.

Yes, most insurers offer monthly, quarterly or annual payments. Some charge small fees for instalments — we’ll show you the exact difference before you decide.

It depends on the policy. Some include full roadside assistance in Spain (and sometimes even across Europe); others offer it as an add-on. If this matters to you, let us know — we’ll make sure it’s in there.

You’ll need:

  • Vehicle registration papers (permiso de circulación)

  • Spanish ID (NIE/TIE) or passport

  • Driving licence

  • Proof of address (for some insurers)

If you’re still in the process of getting your documents, we can often work with temporary solutions.

Yes. You can add a partner, family member or employee to your policy as long as they meet the requirements.
Be transparent — insurers can deny claims if an undeclared regular driver was behind the wheel.

Most policies include basic EU-wide third-party cover. Full cover abroad depends on the policy. Let us know if you drive regularly to France, The UK, Holland, Portugal or elsewhere. We’ll include this in the setup.

Yes. Policies typically run for 12 months. To cancel, most insurers require 1 month notice before renewal.
We’ll remind you in time and help you cancel, switch, or adjust your cover.

Premiums vary based on:

  • Driver’s age and history

  • Car type and age

  • Coverage level (third-party vs. full)

  • Parking location (garage/street)

As a rough guide:

  • Third-party starts from €20–40/month

  • Fully comprehensive starts from €60–90/month

You’ll of course always receive a clear quote with the exact number.
